About Me.

Hello. I'm Ulises.

Volunteer Work

I’m an experienced instructional designer, project manager and learning systems administrator. My passion is to create interactive and engaging learning experiences at the intersection of UX/UI, learning sciences, design, and AI.

Instructional Design

The Instructional Design profession is not recognized as such by the US Department of Labor. The Occupational Outlook Handbook does not list Instructional Design or eLearning Developer as an occupation. Due to that fact, my ethics, reputation and knowledge are the competencies that make me stand out as a professional. The selection of a workable and suitable framework and model for a learning project involves several factors that are unique to each project. I have in-depth knowledge and experience using several reaserch-based instructional design models, most of which I've had the opportunity of using in projects with various levels of complexity.

Learning Technology

When I was a member of ICICLE (Industry Connections' Industry Consortium on Learning Engineering) during its inception, I had the opportunity of making my contribution to its mission of developing Learning Engineering as a profession and as an academic discipline. My formation as an Engineer gave me the ability to provide my expertise in the requirements of practicing Engineering as a profession. I was also able to contribute some of my L&D experience by providing my knowledge of competency models to define competency-based academic education.

Learning and Cognitive Sciences

The learning and cognitive sciences are an essential part of my design process. Every design decision and element included in my learning experiences is supported by reliable, peer-reviewed research, and based on the learning and cognitive sciences. From Paivio's dual-coding theory to the Reboot Foundation's critical thinking research, I ensure that every element of my designs are supported by the science and engineering of learning.

Play and Games for Learning

Learning is in my DNA. Ever since my very first professional job, I've always been involved in training inititatives, being involved in training staff and preparing education materials as part of the deployment of new technologies, projects or professional development opportunities. I also use evidence-based research to facilitate the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs that integrate games in a broad range of formal and informal learning settings.

The Human Aspect

I’m passionate about sharing knowledge and meeting new people. I've had the opportunity to share ideas at various events around the globe. I have delivered training and instruction to a diverse range of audiences, from senior leadership executives, to recipients of adult basic education. I have designed and delivered learning for multiple industries, including the non-profit sector. At a more presonal level, I have contributed my expertise in areas of interest to many different charities and non-profit organizations. My favorite one was my "Shoulder-to Shoulder" men's support group.

Feel free to explore my work and my blog, or contact me. I'm always interested in providing superior learner-centered, equitable educational experiences that inspire all learners equally.
